If I’ve considered studying abroad chances are you too have thought that the benefits of studying abroad are endless. And, as smart as you are, you also have thought that the reality of it is different from what you expect.

Let’s go through some and find out which expectations were on point and which ones were way off!

Expectation 1: Getting the paperwork done will be tough

Getting all the paperwork ready can be a tedious process, the reason why so many students believe that it’s really hard to apply for abroad studies. Yes, it can be tiresome but it can be done! Proof? As many as, 323,972 students are currently studying abroad.

Also, you don’t have to do them all by yourself, there are various educational consultancies and experienced counsellors who can assist you with paperwork.

Expectation 2: Passing semesters will be difficult

As the educational system of your study destination can be different from your home country, it makes sense for you to be nervous when thinking about passing semesters. It may be difficult but not impossible – semesters are meant to be passed. You will run across supportive instructors and friends to help you study well.

Tip: Not letting your mind get affected by maintaining a positive attitude will help you relax and study.

Expectation 3: The days will revolve around assignments and presentations

“You will be under so much pressure with having to do assignments and presentations all the time”, heard this before? But let me as you something, will you not have to do assignments and presentations even if you don’t study abroad? The chances of the answer being “no” is very low.

It all comes down to balancing academic and social life, it may take a few tries, but you will get the hang of it.

Tip: Try working on building a proper routine, it gives clarity.

Expectation 4: Making new friends will be difficult

Making new friends in a completely new environment is tough enough for an extrovert; if by any means you are an introvert, the task seems even more unachievable. But it’s far from the truth, initially you will make friends from your own community, and over time the numbers will increase, and networks will expand.

The friendship becomes even more special as you will have friends from many nationalities.

Tip: Use your free time to interact with new people and get to know their likes and dislikes.

Expectation 5: Living alone will be depressing

You would assume that working, studying and surviving will make you plenty busy. But, living with family your whole life, then the sudden move to live alone will definitely impact you. Nevertheless, remember that your friends and families are just a call away.

Tip: Take a break and talk to your friends and family when stressed.
